Gold Sovereigns
1848 Victoria Gold Sovereign.
In 1848, a significant change was made to the design of the sovereign coins. Queen Victoria’s head became larger, moving away from the smaller head design that had been used from 1838 to 1847. The smaller head was produced in very small quantities, while the larger head became more common.
Young Head (small): This design is rare, with smaller heads used in the first years of Queen Victoria's reign.
